Review: ‘Miss Meadows’ proves looks could be deceiving

MANILA, Philippines — Katie Holmes already graduated from the sweet image we got used to during her Dawson’s Creek days as she now ventures into a more mature and diverse role in this satirical comedy written and directed by Karen Leigh Hopkins, "Miss Meadows."

Meet the sweet school teacher by day, gun-toting vigilante by night, "Miss Meadows", as it hits theaters on April 15 exclusively at Ayala Cinemas.

The film proved that looks could be deceiving because Mary Meadows, popularly known as “Miss Meadows”, is portrayed by Holmes as sweet miss goody two-tap-shoes girl, only with a twist as she is also a discreet merciless murderer of bad guys.

At the beginning, you could mistake the movie as a Disney film since Miss Meadows talk with small animated animals such as birds and squirrels, with a catchy whistle tune on the background, and walking around their village while reading her poetry book until the mood shifts as she got hit on by a truck driver whom she later on killed with her trusted handgun.

Since Miss Meadows appears smart, perfectly well-mannered, stylish, and reserved, she was able to capture the hearts of her neighbors, her students in the school where she serves as a substitute teacher, and later on attracts accordion-playing Sherriff (James Badge Dale), who described her as strangely funny, oddly funny, beautifully funny, uniquely funny.

The phrases “Todaloo” and “Have no fear, Miss Meadows is here” added more to her charm. Nobody had an idea that Miss Prim and Proper is toting a tiny revolver in her purse.

As the film goes along, it will leave us engaged as to what made this woman a beautiful killer who believes bad guys are unforgivable and how Miss Meadows and Sherriff’s love story would go once he found out his fiancée is the culprit to the murders in the neighborhood who was described by the authorities as “kind of a ‘Pulp Fiction’ Mary Poppins.” Will their love prevail?

Miss Meadows which had its first world premier at the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival, will be shown on April 15, exclusively at Ayala Cinemas.
